How do we teach kids to cross a busy street?

Monday, April 09, 2007
Posted by Lucie deLaBruere

It seems that everywhere I turn lately, I find educators struggling over how to responsibly move forward with the use of Web 2.0 tools in an educational setting. Ed-tech leader, Ed Barry, recently asked Vermont colleagues to share what PROCESS they use in deciding which tools to allow in their schools? Most of the answers offered referred to the school’s Acceptable Use Policies, with many of us agreeing that our AUP’s need updating. I walked away from this meeting eager to research AUP’s that supported a School 2.0 environment and the process used to design them. The insightful post and comments I collected on the topic, left me with more questions than answers. So instead of a summary, I offer you a list of questions that these writers touch on, and invite you to peruse their insight and share your own thoughts.

  • How do we teach kids to cross a busy street?

  • How can we support an institution with desires to seek innovation in teaching, learning and research; willingness to innovate & a growing culture of sharing?

  • How can schools ensure that they are fulfilling their duty of care to ensure safe environments for their students?

  • How do we promote a culture of social responsibility?

  • Must we reach beyond Acceptable Use Policies?

  • How do schools make and enforce rules when students are not on school ground or acting as part of a school function?

  • Should our AUP’s reflect understanding of changes in our culture?
Should AUP support us to change our culture?

  • How do your AUP's integrate IT policies with Institutional policies?

  • What key principles are your AUP’s based on?

  • What is the best approach to deploying risk assessment and risk management ? What legal risk do schools face?

  • Is your AUP used as a control mechanism to prevent usage which IT staff may frown upon?

  • Does your AUP work on behalf of your organization in helping to ensure the effective use of IT by its users?

  • Why do we hide behind AUP’s?Where did our policy come from? Is it infallible?

  • What mechanism do you have for changing your AUP and engaging your users in that change?

  • How does it take into account the facts that technologies change, usage changes, and culture changes?

  • Is your AUP simple or sophisticated enough to accommodate for technical and organizational complexities we face in the 21st century?

  • Should we wait to evaluate and master immature technologies before permitting them?

  • How can we provide safe environments, minimize risk, allow learning and encourage enthusiast?

  • How can we develop policies around technologies that are a massive productivity enhancer and also a great time sink?

  • How can schools fulfill their duty of care to ensure safe environments for their students?

  • Can AUP’s guide us towards an agreed role and agreed manner of operation for that role?

  • Can AUP’s keep up with the fast pace of emerging tools and uses of these technologies (i.e. recording capabilities of cell phones and other economically accessible tools)

  • Should time tested principles such as ETHICS be at the center of our acceptable use policies?

  • How do we involve students in the process of updating AUP’s?

  • How do we promote a culture of social responsibility? Must we reach beyond Acceptable Use Policies? (repeated for emphasis)

I love this analogy, Lucie. Crossing a street is necessary, just as is learning to be a digital citizen. Let's teach our kids to navigate the world they live in rather than banning them from every potentially useful resource!

Even if we could somehow wave a magic wand and make all of the "bad" web sites go away, we would still have a problem with accessing the sites we (I?) want to access in school. In the real world, there is only so much bandwidth, and bandwidth costs money. When we have high schools with 3,000 kids hitting the same pipeline for data, we are going to always run into the same problem; too much traffic.

I think a solution is available; S.L.C.’s! When you have small groups, you can monitor kids and hold them accountable- teach them! You don’t need to rely on a filter, or a firewall (though those are good!) you can rely on your eyes and ears and see what kids are doing.

Just my 3 cents. (inflation you know.)

SLC sounds good, but i dont know what it its, its sounds close to TLC - tender loving care....?

by the way, my 8 year old knows how to cros a street, but doesnt yet get allowed out there on his own... maybe thats good for SLC and digital learning.

one good thing about internet, it can be used for self paced one-one learning and exploration - so maybe small groups are the answer - teach people ( unemployed adults?) to act as facilitators, and then get them to run small group learning centres and watch the kids screens to ensure they dont get "run over"

The 'busy street' analogy seems to have hit home for some, as it did me when I first read it. I must give credit to Mike Seyfng for his 'busy street' comment on the Australian educational blog "You are Never Alone". As I indicated in my intro paragraph to this post, each of the questions included in this post came directly from one of the writings I referenced in a collection of links on the topic. I am hoping that the questions were just enough to invite dialogue and/or further reading of what others have shared during their policy setting process. Isn't it great that the culture of sharing our process, our questions, our strategies (both those that work and those that don't) can help each of us as we work through many of the same issues.

That Warcraft spam is just too funny, sorry (I regularly have to delete mysterious new comments on my blog too...so I feel your pain).

On to the subject at hand, AUP has always done a great job of defining good and bad browsing; but a great AUP also teaches responsibility, information literacy, while still giving students a voice and the flexibility to discover on their own. My mother always had a weird thing about perverts hiding in a library back when I was a kid...but she still made me go.

Now that students are routinely creating content, tossing in a bit of civics and social responsibility is just as important. If we are going to stretch the crossing the street metaphor...are our students painting the crosswalk in some cases?

Using your analogy of ‘teaching students to cross a busy street,’ I feel that the Web 2.0 tools create a unique opportunity to create more independence and less dependence on us as teachers. (We no longer need to hold their hand!) Social networking tools allow for students to interact with each other- which teaches the importance of networking prior to getting to the real-world.

With the busy informational highway of the internet, it is important for us to teach students how to analyze information as safe, reliable, and trust-worthy. Teaching students how to use the internet properly is important. Like with research, students need to learn the elements of a quality source of research. Teaching students how to analyze sites on the internet can prevent ‘traffic jams’ – if you will- from occurring!

Searching the Internet and accidentally running across inappropriate information is the lesser of my concerns today. I think this was covered adequately with the old AUP policies.

Things to consider for systems and social agreements based on the collaborative environment of WEB 2.0 world:
-remembering passwords...can browsers at school be set up so that they NEVER ask kids to remember passwords? My son's email account was accessed by another child at school who proceeded to send messages that were filled with inappropriate material...because he had hastily said "yes" to the prompt from the browser asking if he wanted it to remember his password.

-chat functions...is chatting with those within the classroom appropriate? How about chats with those beyond the classroom? How should teachers monitor?

-email monitoring...in work environments we are told that our email can be monitored. At school, my son is allowed to use his gmail account. I know it might sound counter-intuitive, but why not issue kids district-provided accounts, which would be the ONLY accounts they can access on campus? That way if there was a need, accounts could be checked or verified by the district. I think they DO need to have access to the powers of email, but with accountability. FYI-gmail archives sent messages as well as chats. This system can be institutionalized.

These are things off the top of my head that should be considered for the next generation of AUPs...with WEB 2.0 as the focus.
