We are living in a remarkably dynamic and interesting era of learning. Our present age bridges the "read-only" educational paradigm of the 19th and 20th centuries and the "new read-only and read-write" paradigms of the 21st. The entire concept of user created content published for a global audience was completely outside the lexicon of educators in the previous two centuries. Today, however, learners of all ages are discovering the amazing power of publishing formats like blogs, podcasts, wikis, and digital social networking environments.

The ability to "publish at will" your thoughts, reflections, ideas and opinions for a global audience is an amazingly powerful but also highly disruptive skill. The potential effect of these technologies in empowering citizen journalists is tremendous. Those who create content for others also bear some responsibility for the ideas and the effects of those ideas when they are shared with others, however. Websites like Stopcyberbullying.org (especially in its introductory Flash video) are replete with examples of POOR CHOICES when it comes to the use of digital technologies to communicate and share ideas. Issues of digital ethics and digital citizenship are vital to not only discuss but also PRACTICE with learners of all ages. That is why conversations about "safe digital social networking" and the ways educators as well as parents are helping young people (and each other) learn about the safe, appropriate and fun uses of digital technologies is and will be an enduring need now and in the years ahead.
Desktop videoconferencing technologies like Skype, which permit ad-hoc videoconferences between people using internet-connected computers, webcams and microphones, are aptly characterized by some as "disruptive technologies" which many organizational IT departments fear and resist. The value and power of connecting people both synchronously and asynchronously through voice as well as videoconferencing technologies can be amazing, however. Why do we have all these Internet connections and technology devices in our schools after all, if not to use them to connect learners to valuable content and also TO EACH OTHER?
This latter ideal is exemplified well through the work of Brian Crosby and his 4th grade students in at Agnes Risley Elementary School in Sparks, Nevada. The Washoe School District is the second largest in Nevada. After learning of a new, homebound 4th grade student in his class who has leukemia, Mr. Crosby found the resources to connect the student to her classroom from home using Internet connected computers, webcams, and Skype. The five minute video his 4th grade students created about this innovative "Inclusion" strategy is precious. Take some time to watch the video and then leave a comment on the blog page for the students!
In his February 7th update about this project, Mr. Crosby writes:
What a great example of a teacher using creativity and available resources to open doors of learning not only for the homebound student, but also for every other learner in the classroom, that wouldn't have been open otherwise! Kudos to the 4th grade learners and producers of the film (including the homebound student) and Mr. Crosby for fantastic work. "Inclusion via Skype." It wouldn't have been possible even a few years ago. But today it is.
I wonder if we'll see any parents requesting "Skype connections to the classroom" on their child's IEP?! Carol Anne McGuire, who teaches children with visual impariments, already has some parents requesting podcasting on their child's IEP. Used effectively, Skype might join the list of assistive and enabling technologies that can open doors of learning possibilities for every child with special needs (because every child IS special and unique) in the years ahead.

Videoconferencing works really well for certain types of lessons – brainstorming for writing (which was our first activity on the first day) works well for example – and Celest seems to be able to follow along pretty well in math - I use several web sites to have students practice multiplication facts and she is able to be just one of the students in class when we do that also. Other types of lessons we will have to work out how best to include her. I really want to try involving her in group discussions for example – and I think we can get her in music class too – the music room might be close enough to one of our wireless hubs that I can carry the laptop and web cam in so she can sing along – the music teacher is game, so we will give it a try.

These are exciting times! I am just blown away by the connections I continue to make with each passing day and how I am learning and growing exponentially due to the knowledge management tools we have been afforded.
In an effort to model this style of 21st Century learning I have recently expanded an electronic mentoring project I do with my preservice teachers and highly accomplished teachers from around the states to include "expert learners" from around the global blogosphere, chosen from the connections I have made in my own personal learning network.
In addition to the mentoring project these students are also helping me to build a course (learning ecology) using Web 2.0 tools. We are all constructing knowledge together.
The most exciting dimension to that journey has been virtual Mondays where many of you have met with us online to share your ideas and wisdom about how to navigate and leverage these powerful tools in deep learning experiences.
It is my hope that through modeling networking and authentic use of Web 2.0 tools that these soon to be teachers will establish learning environments that look very different in their own classrooms of the future.

We recently ran a professional development session for our six teachers who will receive classroom sets of laptops. They each wereequipped with a digital video camera and a web cam. They were asking questions on how they could connect their classrooms for conversations and I told them aboutSkype . It took about ten minutes and each teacher had downloaded the software and they began experimenting by having conference calls. On teacher took his lap top out in the halls and began asking students questions, our versions of "Man on the street." It was great seeing teachers having fun with the intuitive technology. I am hoping we will have many student stories like the ones from Mr. Crosby's room.

That is great, Sergio! I'd encourage you to check out the work Sheryl has done and continues to do bringing in outside experts and guest speakers into her classroom via skype and videoconferencing. This kind of learning is EXTREMELY rare today in both K-12 and university settings, but is exactly how we should be using technologies to make learning more engaging and expand the walls of the traditional classroom. I'm glad to hear about your new initiative and the excitement of the teachers! The challenge is maintaining that excitement and enthusiasum when it hits the often chilling influence of IT departments and other district leaders driven more by fear than vision.

This is very interesting. It had never even occurred to me to consider the student as knowledge creator/publisher in a K-12 environment. I’ve been following discussions on this same line of reasoning in higher education and what have traditionally been considered the highest levels of academe. For instance, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, which funds academic research in documentary history (among other things), has been grappling with this idea lately. There is growing demand for a more “democratic” method for publishing primary source documents, but the editors who are married to a top-down approach refuse to discuss new methods. It seems that the academic “haves” are resistant to scholarly discourse on this topic.
The notion that K-12 learners would begin to take this level of control of their own education poses some interesting political problems. These have traditionally been the most disenfranchised of learners (and indeed they have some legitimate barriers to effectively managing their own learning), but they are clearly central stakeholders in education.

I think your perception is accurate that many in higher education are reticent to adopt new digital forms of publishing. There are certainly some who are embracing digital publishing forms and attempting to encourage their peers to follow suit. You might check out the SITE blog, which is the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education's blog project that started a few months ago. Also, I listened to a thought-provoking podcast titled "Public Life in a Wired World" from May 2003 with Lawrence Lessig, Pamela Samuelson, and Geoffrey Nunberg which addressed this issue among many others. They mainly discussed DRM but also talked about the opposition that traditional publishers and many in the academic community are showing for alternative digital publishing.
I think student empowerment is a very important issue for schools. Kids are finding empowerment now via MySpace and YouTube, and most schools just want to ignore what is happening. That needs to change. The read/write web technologies are only going to become more powerful and accessible in the years to come.
I definitely agree that there are many creative and productive uses for Skype. No doubt my favorite being that it can help schools communicate with each other and learn from each other. Skype and other VoIP companies are helping people communicate with each other at an affordable cost.
